In 2007, Peter Turner retired as a Commander in the U.S. Navy. With his military career coming to an end, he began to plan for a second career. The obvious choice would have been the airlines, but friends in the industry didn't recommend it. Corporate America was another option. But, ultimately it was franchise ownership that held the most appeal. Turner began to explore his options and found the International Franchise Association's Veterans Transition Franchise (VetFran) Initiative. The VetFran Program — with the cooperation of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Veterans Cooperation and the U.S. Small Business Administration — helps qualified veterans acquire franchise businesses by providing financial incentives not typically available to other investors. While many first-time franchisees see financing as a road block, Turner considered it a mere speed bump. "There are so many options to help pull together Dunkin Donuts franchise financing — a financial partner, the banks, relatives who may be retiring," he says. Through the VetFran program, Turner purchased a store development agreement to open 12 new Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin Robbins restaurants in Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina — the first of which opened in April 2008. A Minneapolis native, he and his partners also signed a multi-unit store development agreement in Minneapolis for the development of new restaurants. For Peter Turner, making the move from Navy Commander to Dunkin' Donuts franchisee is a dramatic life change that he's enjoying, thanks to the VetFran program that made it all possible. |
